Performance vs. stock brakes

Stock brakes are designed for everyday driving conditions, such as commuting and running errands. They can last several years before needing replacement. However, if you frequently drive at high speeds, perhaps on the track (over 110 km/h) or engage in more demanding driving scenarios, performance brakes might be worthwhile.

High-performance rotors and brake systems work by dissipating heat more evenly throughout the braking system, preventing excessive wear on your brake pads. They’re crucial for racing or vehicles that make frequent, quick stops at high speeds. There are multiple design types, such as solid, vented, drilled, slotted and floating, but generally speaking the disc face will be either slotted or drilled.

  • Slotted rotors: Reduce friction and help remove gas, dust, and particulates. They tend to be noisier.
  • Drilled rotors: Perform well in wet conditions. However, they don’t withstand heat as well and can crack under severe conditions.

Brake Fluid

Something often overlooked is brake fluid. Brake fluid categories, known as DOT, vary in composition and performance. DOT3, typically blue in colour, is rarely used in modern German cars. DOT4 is the most common fluid found in new vehicles today. DOT5.1 is glycol-based, while DOT5 is silicone-based.

DOT4 fluids can vary significantly in terms of boiling point and viscosity levels. When choosing brake fluid, it’s important to consider these factors. A higher boiling point helps dissipate heat more effectively and reduces the chances of brake fade under heavy use. However, viscosity also plays a crucial role.

Some manufacturers produce fluids with very high boiling points but higher viscosity ratings. These perform well on the track but may cause the ABS system to respond slightly slower during everyday driving. For daily use, it’s often best to find a balance between boiling point and viscosity to ensure optimal ABS and brake performance.

In essence, selecting the right brake fluid involves weighing the benefits of heat resistance against the need for quick ABS response, depending on your driving conditions and vehicle use.
